Check out and the Laser

A very nice piece of kit with optional inbuilt compass telling you the
pointing direction and with GPS, combined to pin-point position.
According to angle and distance it can calculate crown height, spread,
dbh and location. 

They are expensive if you only get to use them on occasion.
