Hi Edmund,

Principally, adventitious buds are latent, predetermined in the tree and,
suppressed by auxins etc. from the higher leading growth ... species
dependant. Where the distal portions of most plants are lost or removed the
suppressed merristems will flourish. This is why thinning is usually better
than topping.

Dear all, I find I know less about these than perhaps I should. For example
can one conclude by looking at established branches above a topping wound
whether they derive from one or the other? Should I be able to infer from
the species or other characteristics the likelihood that branches arising
around and near a topping wound are derived from adventitious or dormant
buds.

As ever, Edmund
