Subject: Felling a long dead oak
How best to approach this, likely to be very hard isn't it?
SC: "hard" as in a difficult job, or as in some pretty tough wood? Could
be either.
SC: White group oaks will maintain solid heartwood long after the sapwood
is sloghing off. And they will tremain sound much longer than red group
oaks. Many years ago I had a job ticket to fell an old red oak stub in the
woods behind a housing development. The kids were chopping away at the
rotted trunk which was say 24" diameter. Only about 1/3 of that was left all
on one side. Not enough to "steer" the trunk down with a typical felling
notch. We were afraid the whole thing might go any which way the instant we
touched the wood with a chain saw, so we attached a 1" rope to the top and
hooked it up to the truck's capstan... should break right over then , no?
NO! Couldn't break the fool thing over. There was a slender column of sound
oak that just would not break.
SC: I'd say the main problem will be the tops. If you are going to fell
it, you'll want a guide rope pulling from the "top" but be sure you are down
in sound wood or the top might just snap off. And anticipate a great shower
of broken smaller braches and a big mess to clean up unless you just intend
to leave it all in the pasture.
Have a happy!

(p.s. happy new year)
