If the tree was hollow when still standing it is very likely that
jackdaws nested in there at some time. Corvids are always passing loads
of grit to blunt mere humans chainsaws. I once cut up a fallen beech
that had hosted a rookery for years - all the branch unions had
incorporated grit in them from years of corvid crapping and wiping of
feet! It was deep dark winter and the sparks were clearly visible as the
job slowed and slowed.

Happy New Guys,

<A few week's ago we were cutting up a dismantled ash. It had a lot of
rot in the centre and whenever the chainsaw hit the rot it seemed to
blunt it very quickly. I'd not come across this before and was a bit
mystefied, and knackered, so handed the saw to a classmate who sharpened
it and found the same thing happening to him.>

Happens to me too;

As a moving chain enters a decay pocket containing leafy mass with high
water content, the lubricating oil will disperse quicker. This causes
greater friction around the bar and rails, heating the steel chain and
quickly dulling a sharpened edge. Rather than continuing into the cavity
- try working around it (easier said than done) or allowing the chain to
oil by withdrawing the bar from the cut, frequently.
