That sounds like a very high risk strategy - pathologically speaking.

Subject: Tree Cloning
Recent news story, which may be of interest to some:
'New York is trying to cultivate a greener image by cloning one million
saplings from some of its oldest trees.
"We want to break the stereotype of New York as skyscrapers and
sidewalks," New York Park Commissioner Adrian Benap York told reporters.
High school students are being enlisted to climb into cherry pickers and
gather cuttings for the project.
One of the trees to be cloned is the St Nicholas elm - known as the
dinosaur in upper Manhattan - which New Yorkers claim George Washington
walked under 230 years ago during the American Revolutionary Wars.
Branches taken from the trees will be sent to laboratories in New York,
Oregon, Canada and Britain for cloning.
Park officials said the project would also target "Olmsted trees"
planted some 150 years ago by architect Frederick Law Olmsted.
They said the clones would be genetically identical, but would not be
identical in shape.'
