Hi Rupert,
Thank you for your message. I had a similar message from Keith Sacre
from Barchams Trees and he has also stated similar experience to limbs
being secure with trees in France. So sounds like this one is a goer.
Best wishes
Ian

Hi Ian
I think they are great trees for coastal limestone; or indeed inland
limestone/neutral soils. Classic shape as mature trees - broad domed
crown, usually several big limbs arising from a stem which is quite
variable in height before dividing. Nice big cones (don't start a
thread about risk rating of them dropping! (oh no that was on QTRA
forum, about Bunya Nuts in Oz))and edible seeds. The best one I knew in
UK was at Dartington Gardens.
It blew down 2 yrs ago; dbh about 90cm. It never shed any limbs, and
by the time it blew over it was well over-mature - I counted 130 rings,
and the recent ones were all very tight - <1mm; so it was on its way out
anyway
All in all a great shape for a conifer - and fairly bullet-proof ref
possible limb-loss etc.
All the best
Rupert

Hi Rupert,
Do you have any thoughts on this one with regard to future safety.

Hi Guys,
Could you please provide me with your thoughts on the above species as a
park/open space tree.
Their branches appear regimented and wonder whether this may predispose
them to fail. If so do they immediately fall or hang on. Otherwise are
they quite a sturdy and tolerant tree and would you feel confident with
their inclusion in a tree planting scheme.
(yes, that time again and nearing the end of the financial year).
Ian
