Are there any statistics anywhere with regard to what we are actually
building? <

Developers who purchase substantial pockets of land, or persuade owners
of older style properties to sell for redevelopment for high density
housing has been going on since the 90's at least!!

Check out Google Earth and with some ease the 'new' development should
instantly stand out. It may even be possible to calculate the amount of
land which has been capped by hard surfacing, terracotta, paving,
tarmacking etc, and most importantly lacking any large tree populations.
