Dear All,
Like a number of other consultants, where necessary, I draw RPAs as
polygons, it can be a long drawn out process but it can be done with Autocad.
I would also be willing to send Autocad plans to the LPA so that they could
check the areas of the RPAs using Autocad or other drawing programme. I
suspect if I sent it as a DXF you would be able to get your IT people to load
it onto your GIS system.
I must admit though that I have a case at the moment where the shape of the
RPA of a few trees should be altered but as it is without doing that the RPAs
encroach across the footprint of the proposed building, a large wooden shed
on pad and beam foundations. Correcting the RPAs in this case will not alter
the AIA or method statement.

If for example you have a scenario with a large tree, adjacent to
existing deep construction such as a highway and a proposal to build in
open ground just outside a conventional RPA. You would want to see a TCP
justifying a re shaped RPA based on the restricted rooting opportunities
beneath the highway?
I feel I should now be asking to see more TCPs.<
Depending on whether you trust and have a good relationship with the Arb
consultant (AO. Surely, you would want to check them anyway, for piece
of mind and your own credibility. For example we have twice received a
miscalculated DBH, IMO deliberately reducing the RPA to allow for the
construction of a proposed driveway. I don't wish to get hung up on this
but RPA's are based on 'minimum' distance and tree tolerance and where
possible should be increased.
I find the easiest method to check an 'adjusted RPA' is to use GIS set
at the 'Architects' scale. Mark out the area using 'polygon ruler' and
double click for automatic calculation.
