Appreciate the fact that most of the carbon is being recycled or locked
up as carbon in the soil, but decomposition also generates methane how
that skews the balance I'm unsure.

be taken up again in the new leaves the next year so it is an ongoing
carbon capture of a kind, up until the tree dies or is felled.  But over
the life of a tree the average amount kept circulating in the foliage
must be quite a proportion of that in the whole tree, don't you think?
Certainly all those bags of leaves I lug around to the composting bins
each autumn aren't light...well I s'pose they are partly if you see what
I mean...
