Appreciate the fact that most of the carbon is being recycled or locked
up as carbon in the soil, but decomposition also generates methane how
that skews the balance I'm unsure.

But over the life of a tree the average amount kept circulating in the foliage must be quite a proportion of that in the whole tree, don't you think?
