There is a very short but interesting article in May's edition of
Countryfile magazine.
'Helicopters were brought in to remove 2,000 trees that were in the 1970's
over the shallow bell pits of an iron works in Wilsontown, South
Lanarkshire. The bell pits are being restored as part of a project promoting
industrial heritage; it was thought that extracting the trees by land might
have caused damage to the pits.' It would be interesting to hear if anyone
has any further details of the move or any experience of using helicopters
to shift timber here in the UK, additionally what the cost implications may
be in relation to other sensitive sites where horse extraction may be a
possibility.
