We had a case here where half the hawthorn in a street died bit by bit
over a number of year. Turned out to beetle damage - well their larvae
really. Beastie called a Buprestid beetle, Agrilus sinuatus. Larvae
munch through the cambium and inner bark leaving very characteristic
serpentine galleries (visible when bark is removed) and if you have
enough of them then the tree can be effectively ringed. Emergence holes
are flattened on one side leaving a kind of D shape.

after flush?>
Forgot to add that this kind of damage, especially from a cold wind
tends to leave on side of a trees crown affected/browned off. Frost
pockets causing lower crown damage presumably.
