Lightning Strike!

Subject: Lightning Strike!
From: Paul Casey
Date: May 15 2008 09:33:04

At the beginning of May, a storm passed over Harrogate and N. Yorks, which
was quite impressive in terms of the lightning & thunder bursts.

On the 13th May, I was in one of Harrogate's public gardens when I came
across this Corsican Pine. My only conclusion is that this tree must have
been hit by a bolt of lightning during that storm. You can see the line that
the lightning has travelled from the top to the bottom of the tree.

We did receive a report a day or so after the storm that vandals had tried to
rip the bark off a tree in this public garden but the report never gave us
any idea of location. However, after finding this I can only assume that it
was not vandals at all but the shear force of the lightning blasting the bark
off some of the lower stem of the tree.

Luckily nobody was using the footpath at the time of the storm when the
strike hit otherwise that may have been very interesting indeed.
