RE: Fungal bracket ID

Sorry ... I actually thought the fungus was Fomes fomentaris and
whatsmore, that actually produces a white rot (not a brown rot like
Fomes pinicola). Yeah it's the tinder fungus favoured by Ray Mears and
common on Beech in the UK. Anyway, they're both annuals that have the
same prognosis ... Brittle fracture, both on living and dead trees and
both get into the wood after other organisms and pathogens have been in
there. So you usually see it consuming old standing dead and dying
trees.

<Fomitopsis is both a parasitic and saprophytic brown rot, which usually
enters a tree following its decline from other decay organisms, fungi,
insects etc. Usually found on dead wood (Beech wood) it is not normally
a primary agent of infection.>

Hi Ron,

Are we talking about Fomes fomentarious or Fomitopsis pinicola?

I know of Fomes, called Hoof Fungus because of its shape, Tinder fungus
too, demonstrated by Ray Mears 'fire' transportation, and which I've
noticed growing on Beech/Poplar in the south and Birch in the north.
