Nick,
Further to Robert's information the Forestry Commision pdf "The Influence of
soils and species on Tree Root Depth" may assist in applying root morphology
data in different soils.

Arb journal vol 14 No. 3 August 1990 contains examples with characteristics
of certain sp's rootplate morphology. 'Tree Root Plate Morphology' & 'The
wind blown trees survey: analysis of results' in association with Task Force
Trees, following on from windblowns from '87 storm (Gasson & Cutler)

Examples mainly taken within Kew's grounds (Nb old Thames bed).

I have had a case where an ash tree has had its roots severely pruned
without consent and have to write a report. Does anyone know of any
literature I can cite and where I can find this (or can anyone email me
any?).
