I guess it depends on the substrate Ed - there are plenty of places in
Norfolk where it would be a surprise if the ground didn't move - I'm
sure you know some. However, in the normal run of things I think I would
rather not feel movement.

I have not inspected this tree Ian so cannot answer those questions. Nor
can I say whether nearby structures have lifted. I do know that by the
time I get there any radial or circumferential cracking may have closed
without trace.
No my question to all you tree inspectors is how do you know, and by
extension, is there published research out there to help inform your
judgements?
Quoting Ian Brewster <Ian.Brewster@xxxxx.gov.uk>:
Is there evidence of Radial or Circumferential cracking at a short
distance to the main stem which may suggest root fracture and
potential plate failure. Other than this it sounds like the trees
natural flexing and necessity to stimulate reactive wood growth of
underlying anchor roots where required, usually the side of prevailing
wind.

Subject: When the earth moves
Now and again I have found myself next to a tree flexing in the ground
during high winds. It's quite fun feeling the ground rise and fall
beneath your feet without having to drink to get there.
Is this ground movement a reason to fell or is it perhaps an
understandable physical event without serious health and safety
inplications?
Could it even be both and how the hell should we then distinguish
between the two?
One of those trees I enjoyed teetering (a biggish Beech) is still
there
5 years on, and if I hadn't been there at the time I'd never have
known.
I only ask because I have a client with a TPO'd tree and he felt the
earth move beneath it this weekend.
