Nick,

I've just read my last email and it probably reads as though I'm teaching
you to suck eggs. No doubt you'd already considered all those suggestions
anyway.

Nick,

No literature I'm afraid just some suggestions:

I'd suggest considering using a tree radar for locating the roots or trial
holes using an air pick. You may find there is nothing substantial in the
way.

Then its a case of considering the temporary protection to the ground to
spread the load of the piling rig, the shearing forces and vibrations on
roots that are in the way, leakage of contaminants and how you're going to
fit the piling rig in beneath the crown.

I should think a lot is going to depend on soil type. If you was on clay
do you think the glazing that might occur as a pile or auger went in would
glaze the pile hole wall enough to stop contaminants leaking laterally?

Here's an interesting piling site

Afraid not Ron, this is for a substantial lighting structure at a
sporting
facility. The tower is some 50m in height with a 6 ton lighting unit on
the
top. It is a substantial engineering project. The detailed design is
still
ongoing however I am lead to believe that it will consist of 6-8no. 450mm
piles of around 20m depth. They are all to be placed in the RPA of 2 no.
TPO'd Lime trees. Space is at a real premium and relocation is not an
option.

Does anyone know where I may find guidance regarding piling in proximity
to trees?
