TREES: THE KEY TO CLIMATE PROOFING OUR CITIES- London, 10th July 2008.
A 10% increase in urban tree cover could neutralise rising city
temperatures, but large trees with irreplaceable climate-control benefits
are being lost at an alarming rate. This pioneering conference explores
practical possibilities to reverse tree loss within current planning
framework. It can be done: our objective is to define how to do it. FINAL

Honestly Ian, I can't see anything wrong in avoiding offence, particularly
if we are trying to engineer compromise. I dare say most of us come in
varying shades of green and some of our customers, whisper it, remain
hopelessly anti planet, but as tree officers our powers to educate should
be held in check and probably confined to voluntary audiences.
I once had a bizarre interview with a lady complaining about the shade cast
by a street tree into her spare bedroom. We went in there and the bed was
covered in boxes in long term storage and the window was heavily draped
with lace and hemmed in with heavy duty curtains. I said why don't you
remove the lace curtains, that'll let the light in; and it was a reasonable
point, she would have had no privacy compromised. But it did not (to put it
mildly) facilitate the discussion.

Oh if only we were allowed to tell people what we really think of them,
they might benefit from the education. Instead we are obliged to tip toe
around their feelings in case we offend and in doing so we perpetuate
their misguided delusions.
But hey, that's customer service for you!!
