TREES: THE KEY TO CLIMATE PROOFING OUR CITIES- London, 10th July 2008.
A 10% increase in urban tree cover could neutralise rising city
temperatures, but large trees with irreplaceable climate-control benefits
are being lost at an alarming rate. This pioneering conference explores
practical possibilities to reverse tree loss within current planning
framework. It can be done: our objective is to define how to do it. FINAL

Agreed but it tends to be the most vociferous or unreasonable that call
me to complain. I don't need to convert the converted.
It appears to me that there is a tendency for local Authorities to
promote the idea that we exist to solve everyone's problems for them and
that helps us towards achieving chartermark status. IMO that contributes
towards dependency and intolerance in some demographic groups,
particularly in my experience amongst the retired population, many of
whom are exprofessionals and for some complaining maintains a sense of
self-worth otherwise missing in their retirement. There are plenty of
grumpy old gits out there who have a deep seated problem with authority
and an inflated view of their rights. Obsessive new parents are another
problem demograph in my experience. Its both irritating and fascinating
in a lab-rat sort of way.
Perhaps the next phase of your research John, could look deeper at the
psyche of the urban population and how that relates to tree populations.

I think Alan's story is great but we mustn't forget Ian that this type
of interaction is rare - most people love trees and in that sense we
certainly don't have to tip-toe around their feelings - we should be
embracing them.

Oh if only we were allowed to tell people what we really think of them,
they might benefit from the education. Instead we are obliged to tip toe
around their feelings in case we offend and in doing so we perpetuate
their misguided delusions.
But hey, that's customer service for you!!

I've had a surreal conversation with a lady who just asked me to capture
the owls living in the tree behind her house and have them translocated
to a zoo or handed over to the RSPB. Why? She doesn't like them, and is
afraid they might swoop donw on her when she's using the garden at
night..
After a lengthy explanation of the reasons why I can't do this and how
it would be illegal, I got, " Today is the 1st of July Mr Woolpack and I
will note down your response in my diary. You have been warned"

It's a funny old job at times this is...
