Can't help much Gordon but I was in Paris at the time and came across a
couple of chaps installing them. They were drilling an 8mm (I think)
hole about 70mm into a plane tree at a height of about 1.3m and
inserting what looked a bit like the sort of capsule that you get
medicine in and swallow. They then plugged the hole with mastic from an
ordinary mastic gun. I tried to have a conversation with them but my
French is pretty schoolboy and we didn't get far.
Vets use similar chips which they insert under the skin to identify
domestic pets so if you are thinking of doing this their suppliers may
be a starting point

information on an inventory using remote sensing chips or products in
trees - performed in Paris possibly 5 to 10 years ago?
