If you really need to age the trees, i.e. for a grant application, the
surest way would be to remove a poor specimen (one without basal decay,
from a group similar in stature) if possible and count the rings. The
prevalence and growth of certain Lichen species may also be indicative. 

Alternatively you could try applying the FC's Aging of veteran trees
calculation. One of the draw backs is that cultivated Apples were
subjected to heavy pruning. Perhaps this may cause similar effects in
reducing annual ring growth as with Pollarding.
