There are some big old Zelkova carpinifolia at Pitt House, Chudleigh
Knighton, visible from the A38 (the Champion used to be next door at Pitt
Farm, but was taken down some years ago). I did a safety inspection on them
last year. They all had, to varying degrees, strips of dead cambium running
up the stems/ascending branches/whatever you call the mass of organ pipes
rising out of a perfect natural tree-houseontop of the short bole. They
seemed to have been able to compartmentalize the disease radially, but not
vertically. One of them looks a bit thinner in the upper crown this year,
but they do seem to be able to live with the disease. The young ones all
around (suckers and sections of hedgerow) seem to be unaffected.

All the best
Rupert

Anyone seen any of this on Z. carpinifolia this year?
