I often hear the figure of 6 or 7 deaths each year directly attributable to
trees or bits of trees falling on people -this does not account for arborist
deaths. Julian Forbes Laird keeps (or at least kept)a database. This equates
to a chance of around 1: 10 million of being killed by a tree. I seem to
remember the chance of being struck by lightning as 1: 9 million?? -don't
have a source.

When discussing such figures it's always worth comparing to other fatality
rates. Joan Webber (FC) at the recent Tree Safety Group Conference said the
chances of being killed in a car crash was 1 in 18,500. Neville Fey has good
comparable figures.

I remember a while back that some figures were bandied about
on UKTC re risk of being killed by falling trees. I seem to
remember that the risk of being struck by lightning was much
greater and that was extremely low at that. I've done a quick
search on the archives but to no avail.
