Anyone got suggestions for a good, versatile log-splitter and a chipper?
I'm thinking of buying one, partly as an exercise in processing our woody
waste, partly to generate firewood for sale. Most of our wood is fairly
varied, with large/small/irregular bits to deal with, so no good having a
machine that will only do dead straight forestry wood. Probably run it off
tractor PTO or hydraulics. Never used one myself, so don't know much about
them.
As for chippers, my 8" PTO bearcat is beginning to show its age, and, as I
may have a bit of a windfall courtesy of Hollywood, I'm thinking of selling
it while it is in good nick, and getting a shiny new one. I would again go
for tractor-mounted, as it is only for use on the estate. Ideally I would
like it to be 8" capacity, relatively solid and simple. I realize that
chippers are basically variations on a number of blades hurtling round on a
great big disk, but I bet people have had good and less good experiences.
All suggestions gratefully appreciated before I drag myself off to SALTEX in
a couple of weeks.
