Ian's first duty was to the court as a EW, this is the clear message that  
has come down, solicitors are meant to bend the opinions to their best  
advantage, but a EWs message must be clear and unambiguous otherwise the 
cross  
examination can get very tricky which is what happened here and the Judge 
made  that 
clear in his appraisal.
 
A salutary lesson I am afraid
