I have seen plenty of examples where it seemed to be the causal agent in the
decline and death of oak trees but cannot recall any on beech. Once decline
is serious then you can expect a series of opportunistic secondary colonisers
to join the fray and induce decay.

I have been carrying out a survey today and there was a beech tree with
severe die back in the crown and what I have identified as (Spindle Shank
Collybia fusipes) nearby on the ground. I have looked it up in Lonsdale and
in Strouts. Here it states that it causes root decay and die back but is not
known to cause dangerous decay. Can anyone give me more advice on this?
