You need to be careful wrt offsetting by trees as opposed to sequestration.
Offsetting as it?s sold to the public, celebrities, F1 etc plants trees that
will withdraw the carbon you emit during the lifetime of the tree, not in
the short term. This would only have an impact if short rotation high
quality fast growing trees such as eucalyptus were used (eg 8 + year
rotations). However most tree planting in warmer/poorer countries have poor
growth rates for a variety of reasons, especially in arid areas. Thus even
if we offset all our carbon emissions by planting trees we can anticipate
little impact on atmospheric CO2. As Chris has pointed out if we were to
attempt to offset a significant proportion of emissions (where significant
means it might have an impact) we would need to plant huge areas of land.

I liken offsetting to a new financial program I am developing. You give me
£100 now. I will give you £1 back every year from now on. After 100 years I
might give you back a little bit more, but on the other hand, I might not; I
might not even give you back the whole £100 as I can?t guarantee that I will
be around in 100 years to give it to you (oh that?s right you might not be
around either). Funny that, I haven?t had any takers yet! Clearly the sales
talk behind offsetting depends on allaying the guilt of carbon users, not on
the effectiveness of the carbon removal.
