Hi Nick,
Like others I don't like tagging trees; if they are accurately plotted on a
plan that should be adequate. I do sometimes tag trees on complicated sites
or in woods. I suppose that the type of tag you use depends on cost and how
long you need to recognise the tree. For pre-development surveys I staple
aluminium tags because it is quick but they don't last for more than a few
years. If the tags have to stay on the tree for a long time I use the
galvanised steel ones attached with a single aluminium nail only partially
inserted into the tree to allow for growth. I have re-surveyed trees
initially tagged by Ted Green over ten years ago and he uses this method.
He describes it in a chapter in:
Read H. 1996 (Ed), Pollard and Veteran Tree Management II. Corporation of
London. pp 138-139.

Morning all
Just after a consensus on the most sustainable way to affix tree
numbers/tags. I am finding that in many cases girth expansion is pushing the
tags off of the small nails we currently use in very short time, even if the
nails are left proud. How do others do it? I have noted several different
approaches from staples through to 3" nails!
Thanks
Nick
