I think many purple beeches are just purple seedlings but there are also
quite a few named, purple beech cultivars - such as 'Riversii' - that are
always grafted.

Hi all,
Does anyone know why I see so many 'copper' beeches around here with
what looks like a graft line at around 1 metre on the stem? I've
observed this so frequently, always on old trees, that I'm convinced it
isn't coincidence, but there isn't usually a bulge of the type that
accompanies a graft. I've wondered whether it was to do with preserving
the copper colour or an attempt to limit eventual size, as so many of
them are planted in front gardens, and is it a graft or a primitive
silvicultural trick such as wounding the cambium? Anyone have any ideas?
Alan
