You probably need to speak to a nurseryman for chapter and verse, but my
understanding is that 'copper 'beech is an infinitely variable naturally
arising seedling variant of the native species whilst 'purple ' beech
(the
really dark one) is a stem grafted cultivar, grafted onto standard beech
rootstock, the graftline often leaving a visible swelling and I have
seen
it many times. Not sure if it always happens and those that don't have
it
are just dark copper beech or if some grafts just work better than
others.
