Hi Bill,
When I'm surveying lots of trees I use a gps that the manufacturers claim is
accurate to within 60cm in the open combined with a laser range finder
connected to mapping software on a pocket pc by bluetooth. It works a treat,
easilly downloads into Autocad and saves me loads of time in the office
producing the plans. I use other software to produce the forms on the pocket
pc and the data collected downloads into a relational database back at the
office. Again this works well and saves loads of time. The database is one
that I have developed myself and I'm really happy with it. There's enough
dropdown lists to save time typing but also enough free text boxes to finely
describe an individual tree or feature.
I'm doing some work for a local authority and discussing with them the
possiblity of loading copies of my tree layers from Autocad and the
relational database onto their GIS. If your interested I'll keep you posted.

Most people don't bother these days and just use a software package that
links to GIS.
Who says they do? I've never even seen a software package linked to GIS
outside of a salesman's demonstration. I occasionally see people knocking
about
with what I assume to be some sort of positioning device but I don't recall
ever seeing anyone using one for tree-specific purposes.
Perhaps I'm in bit of a time warp, but I'm not aware of Sheffield Council
using any such thing, or even a software package come to that..... Perhaps
Nick
or Ish can put me right?
As for tags, I've got a box full of Latshbascher ones but I try not to use
them, they do pop off and I have seen strips of necrotic bark that seem to
result from the tag.
