'I'd remind him that IMO trying to individually plot a load of trees in
a woodland for a TPO would be far better treated as a woodland, a more
versatile and powerful tool.'

Not really sure I have the time to plot every tree in all the woodland
orders Bill either old or new. As to what I ve been doing recently
overlaying copies of old TPO's onto new maps so that I can go out and
see what's there. I've resurveyed virtually all of the TPO's now so we
at least have accurate and up to date maps. And wandering around those
two big pesky orders working out what to do with them.

Much of the survey work I am
undertaking involves large numbers of trees and to try and identify
them from a drawing minus the aid of GPS would be impossibility. With a
numbered tag the margin for error is greatly reduced. GPS is all well
and good for the surveyor however if the end user (client) doesn't have
the same capabilities the technology is wasted.

I have to say I'm surprised by how many people do seem to be using
GPS/GIS.
I also have to say that the sort of sites I seem to deal with most
frequently just don't have so many trees that a drawing won't cover
them. Leastways if there are a lot of trees in a group or woodland then
they get treated as er a group, as BS5837 says we should....

I'm not sure what Nick is doing although I know he's reviewing TPOs, I'd
remind him that IMO trying to individually plot a load of trees in a
woodland for a TPO would be far better treated as a woodland, a more
versatile and powerful tool. Especially if you can't clearly identify
which tree is which in a woodland...

Interesting though, probably better pay more attention to the
kit-purveyors.

Bill.
