Hi Dom,
I agree that if tree identification could be awkward tags are useful. Dare I
say that spray paint is also useful for trees to be felled or in areas that
aren't visible. Different colours for different work types. I've also used
different colours of biodegradable tape for this but the squirrels love to
take it off the trees.

I'm inclined to agree with Bill - when surveying trees its easy to
forget the end user. One of my colleagues was recently asked to price
for tree works on a large development site. None of the trees were
tagged and despite the accurate land survey it is almost impossible for
him to find individual trees and to tie up the specification to any one
individual tree.
I'm sure the surveyor/consultant can identify them on their cad software
and tie that in to their spec but it's pretty useless if no one else
can. There's going to be a high chance of the wrong tree felled/pruned
and someone getting into trouble.
Other people need to find the trees we survey and they might not have a
handheld gizmo. We need to keep site of who needs to use the survey
info and how they will use it. Tags are cheap, easy to install and they
work. Ok there are some draw backs but we've managed very well over the
years with this type of system. I like technology but computers are
tools and can be misused - that's not to say chipped trees are not
worthwhile in certain cases.
