JDs answer sounds about right. I found a reference on the web that said
"The seed is allowed to warm stratify for 2 months and then cold
stratify for 2 months before germinating."

A friday afternoon question for you:
I have some Gingko seeds that I picked up in Cardiff last autumn, and
I put them in a pot of soil and have left it outside in all weathers -
but so far no success.
The seed is still there and still healthy, just not growing.
Any thoughts on how to get it to germinate and grow would be greatly
appreciated.
