Is it just possible that we are disengaged from them? Clive's conference

I'm not completely happy with being accused of having a narrow view. Not
that I don't think it's fair comment, but it could be a case of pots calling
kettles black? It seems to me that too many Architects and Horticulturisits
are
happy with trees as long as they don't have roots, or grow branches, or have
leaves, or cast shade. The minute an Arb points out these possible drawbacks
with their own narrow views then they back off and fail to engage.

I seem to recall the CABE representative at Conference a few years ago
coming along to give us some sort of pep-talk, showing some photographs of
well
designed urban spaces then shoving off back to enjoy London life. Did she
stick
around to engage in the bar or even over lunch? And was she about the most
recently appointed member of staff who had obviously drawn the short straw
and
been despatched off to Exeter to put those Neanderthal tree huggers to
rights?

Trouble is we do actually need some CABE-type of body to push design
forward. I'm sick to the back teeth of my clients turning out more and more
mock-neo-georgian 5 bed detached executive enclaves. Precisely how you
achieve
anything different when so many planners simply see trees as a reason to do
nothing
I do not know. I would venture to suggest that dragging CABE out of their
central London palace/office and sending them off to the regions might be a
start......

Come the revolution etc etc etc.

Bill.

PS Regions? That's a bit patronising innit?
