Science can never be divorced from the people who practice it and I
think it is worth remembering that the Cambridge botanic school of
thought has held sway for so long that any intruders into that hegemony
are bound to be viewed critically. No doubt the dialectic will
eventually arrive at a new orthodoxy in time its next challenge but it
has also been said that ideas only die out when the proponents of those
ideas retire from active life.
