With sycamore not being ring porous you're going to need a binocular
microscope to establish your baseline local growth rate.

There is a complicated formula set out in Forestry Commission Research
Information Note 250 which can probably be downloaded called "Estimating
the age of large trees in Britain". I'm not familiar with TEMPO and
prefer broad brush age categories myself.

If a sycamore tree lives on average between 200-300 years, as set out in
the TEMPO guidance notes, how do you age a tree?  Is it similar to
estimating the age of an oak tree, as per the ready reckoner produced by
the Woodland Trust?
