I have no policies or anything to offer as yet, but I suggest you look
closely at "green infrastructure" and also anything that includes the words
"climate adaptation", both of which argue persuasively for urban trees.

Hi Ron,

Sorry, my specific use of the term 'tree policies' was misleading - that is
my understanding of the situation too. However, there should (IMO) be
sufficient and appropriate 'hooks' in place and I just want to make sure that
notwithstanding government guidance we are not found wanting in the future?

A short well worded statement may well suffice, which gives me something to
prepare.

Paul,

Woe, hold on! ... We've just gone throught this bit of our CS, LDF etc.
You don't need to have local tree policies as tree policies are
sufficiently covered within the T&CP Act, the Government Guidnace TPO A
guide to the law and good practice, PPS1, PPS3, PPS7 PPS9, BS5837,
BS3998 etc. That's why the government took away some of our tree related
policies, especially those that referrred to the making of TPOs. If we
all adopt a similar approach then we will have consistent tree policy
management throughout the country and those documents above will become
material considerations in relation to planning.

I have advised out forward planners to make a short statement that we
will onsidere trees in the light of the government guidances above and
when people ask what are our policies on tree protection I refer then to
the above documents.

IMHO ...

Ron.

My team is being consulted (at the 11th hour) by planning policy on this
Council's draft DC policies for the Core Strategy.

I am far from clear on the policy format for the CS, other than LAs
should not be repeating government policy guidance. However, as our
draft environment policies stand woodlands are only referred to once and
trees, well there not, in any context. Equally disturbing is the bias
phrasing of each policy towards development - Development will be
permitted where it.......

Anyway, I digress - I have come across some good examples of robust
policies in a few core strategies and wonder if any of you with more
policy experience can assist in directing me to good examples of adopted
tree policies within your LDF core strategy?

Sorry it's a big ask.

In anticipation.........
