Hi Alex

I think I spoke too soon. I saw the first signs on the Chestnuts by my flat
this morning.

Hello from the other end of Surrey!

Not much about, but have identified the little critters on H. Chestnuts by
Hampton Court last week.

Hmm I don't think we got as low as that in Surrey or there really would have
been chaos, but no sign yet on the trees by my gaff. They were showing first
signs this time last year and the leaves don't get cleared as it's a wooded
area.

The symptoms do appear to be latter than last year - although I recall
being told (by Dr Joan Webber) that this critter successfully over -
winters at temperatures as low as -20.

It was hoped, by many organisations such as the AAIS, that the late cold
snap would have put paid to many a pest.

Just a thought:

Is it possible that the heavy snowfall which hung around for some time
in the SE earlier this year may have had an effect on the Leaf Miner?

Jim

I was out taking photos of this pest this morning. We have had
infestations of Ermine Moth in the northern and rural part of my
district (Cranborne, Dorset) for the past 3 or so years. They appear to
be feeding exclusively on Spindle within the roadside hedgerows. It
seems to be relatively localised, that is within a radius of about 1 to
2 miles but I think it is spreading slowly each year. I haven't seen it
anywhere else on my travels. Perhaps they are hitching lifts on vehicles
or being carried in a slip stream. A lot of the Spindle which had been
repeatedly defoliated each year are in heavy decline or dead.

No experience on control.

Jonathan

Dear All,

Currently there are numerous reports of huge silky webs over trees (many
spindle) and hedges in Gloucestershire. Some householders are somewhat
alarmed. I think these are ermine moth caterpillars.

What is current experience of others on the forum?

Has anyone proposed any control where they are close to residences or
urban footpaths, to allay public concern (which I would not advocate)?

Cheers,

JU
