Agree with you on germination - we have them springing up all over the
placefrom our big tree.

But what a star it is - I remain mystified as to why they are not much more
widespread, at least in this part of the world.

I worked extensively on this species when on the tools in Austria. My
experience of them was that they grew vigourously and were fairly prone
to decay where there were old pruning wounds/storm damage. I also recall
quite a lot of poor forks and included bark, but this might have
something to do with the fact that they were the 'weed tree' of the
Vienese suburbs and never actually grown in nurseries or planted out
intentionally. They are certainly a tenacious species in that neck of
the woods and I regularly saw them germinate and thrive in the cruddiest
of built environments, walls, piles of building rubble etc.

I've recently surveyed a Tree of Heaven in a playground. It has large
cavities at the base of tall and heavy crown stems and so it needs work
to reduce the risk of failure. As its in a prominent location, and there
is a drive to improve the atmosphere of the park, I've thought about
suggesting that it is sculpted to create an attractive feature of
interest. However I'm a little concerned that the wood will be soft to
sculpt and may rapidly decay. Does anyone have any comments on the
durability of Ailanthus?

Cheers,

Ben
