I did some further searches and found out that its quite a hard wood but
prone to cracking if it dries quickly.
Thanks to Graham, I know about their propensity to sucker and had recommended
grinding the stumps of the other Ailanthus that are being removed from the
park for that reason, its just because I got excited by the sculpture idea I
forgot the suckering problem. I think you're right, if we remove the crown
from a 20m tree suckers will come up from everywhere. It's growing in a small
island surrounded by a rubber play surface and I could see suckers tearing
through that - for this reason I've dropped the idea.

Expect massive disruption of the playarea surface though. We've had
suckers push their way up through kitchen floors & pass completely under
the property & pop up in rear gardens. Takes several treatments to kill
off.
