Saw this (Xylaria polymorpha) on the base of a large sycamore with a
decent-sized area of bark-loss and decay on one side, and Armillaria
rhizomorphs all around
Books say it's a deadwood specialist on Acer and beech.
Question: is the presence of a deadwood saprophyte an indication of the
progress of the killing of basal tissue by the Armillaria?
