I may have missed the boat on this but it looks and sounds like Mesqite
(spelling is probably wrong!) not sure which one but it will be Prosopis
spp - common in South West USA particularly Arizona and California.

Kind Regards

Hi Matthew
I have one of these in my garden which I bought for seven quid from a
nursery in Saffron Walden!
It is growing well if rather slowly.
I first came across this species it when I saw it in one of our
residents
gardens in Southend,Essex ,she also bought her one from architectural
plants.
Her tree was probably about 6 metres or so and was multi stemmed if I
recall
rightly,it had brilliant peeling bark which my one is now developing.
I think it has white flowers, also has attractive foliage.
A tree we should plant more of I think.
Cheers
Rick

Thanks for these replies.

I'm sending a pic of the whole tree in situ. Its notable feature is
its
cinamon red bark. I didn't see this however because the tree was
entwined
with creeper and I saw it over a tall brick wall. If you get Google
images
you can see the bark is however quite strident.
