I don't know but I would have thought that, for root grafting to occur
between two different GENERA it would also have to occur above ground and I
don't think it does between willows and poplars - or any other related
species. Branches may rub and touch but I've never heard of an actual
bonding at cellular level - which is what you are interested in.

But, as I say - no idea!

Considering that they are from the same family and almost physiological
and DNA identical that would appear to be so. Have any of you
experienced naturally grafting of these similar species in the field or
have a reference to hand.
