All I can say about Marcus is that he has left a bewildering trail that has
not really inspired confidence. I cannot make any other comment as I haven't
discussed it with him.
I don't think anything that transpired as a result of the Marcus thread
actually made any real criticism of Giorgio Catena or Thermography. I'm
fairly content that used properly it's got a lot to tell us, if the things
were cheap they'd sell like hot cakes and we'd have another pest
(inexperienced non-arbs condemning trees) with which to deal.
I'm not sure precisely what mess has been generated by whom and how, but it
simply increases my scepticism about the wisdom of shoving university-based
academics into commercial areas. Sometimes research for the sake of research
is necessary without a financial carrot to encourage it.
I don't think we're ever going to discover a universal panacea that will
unlock all trees' secrets and give us a recipe for how to treat them, but
researchers like Giorgio, Pierre Raimbault, Francis Halle and others I've not
even heard of might help us to actually 'see' what we're looking at.
Bill.
