'Personally if I were leaving a mound of chips somewhere I'd try and
make sure they were well-rotted before they got spread around and I'd
also try and make sure the heat from the decomposition didn't similarly
cause any other victims to become more susceptible. I don't particularly
see an accumulation of dead wood (even in the form of woodchips) as a
potential hazard, not withstanding BOD and suchlike.'
Isn't Armillaria a bottom rotter, so top arisings shouldn't be a
problem. I doubt the main stem would have been chipped due to size, but
if so, then 'bootlaces' have been found as high as 4m on a Horse
Chestnut, (possibly A. gallica). Storage of woodchip may perhaps self
sterilise, to encourage other antagonistic microbes and reducing
residual pathogen potency. Best practice suggests the removal of all
stumps and log piles,..(Forestry Commission Bulletin 100 '1991') away
from source of infection, though the book doesn't mention woodchip.
