This does seem counter intuitive Bill but:
Bristol City Council just turned down planning for a massive bio fuel power
plant that was going to create electricity using imported palm oil from the
other side of the world
Stone paving is half the price imported from India than the Forest of Dean
Not so long ago it was cheaper for the local pulp mill to import a ship load
of timber from Latvia than I could supply it for.
So, peut-etre, selling it to France est tres sensible
John

£50 where? Stump, roadside, dockside, delivered? I bet the forestry sector

I presumed roadside, my forestry sector source is noted for not going down
the pub. I shall make a point of looking out for someone to ask. The
woodland's owner is a local estate for whom we occasionally work but I dunno
that the Agent does much beyond getting Tilhill to take on the whole job.
I would've been surprised if the French would pay that much for firewood; I
mean they've got to split it,dry it (my observations of French firewood
while limited suggest they don't tolerate unseasoned) and deliver it, if we
assume 200 euros per tonne delivered to Pascal's door, I wouldn't have
thought it was worth the effort....
But I dunno. Obviously selling firewood that you've scavenged from tree
surgery operations is a different kettle of poisson from actually growing it
but I'm well out of touch with the timber market, it just struck me that
exporting the stuff to France was counterintuitive. And wondered what anyone
else thought?
Bill.
