RE: VAT on AA membership

The text that appears on the AA website members' area
http://www.trees.org.uk/members-area was approved by Julian Millinchamp,
Senior VAT Manager at Hazlewoods (the AA's auditors proposed by Trustees and
approved by AA Members at the AA's AGM in September). His advice was "I have
no problem at all with the general thrust of your letter, and the VAT
treatment which you are proposing to adopt appears perfectly correct."
All members will be issued with a receipted invoice when we receive payment.
If you want one before you make payment just ask - as the letter says.

Well no clarity as far as I can see, but please correct me if I'm wrong, and
I'm speaking as a non VAT registered person.

Now as I see it the Arb Association doesn't, as it claims, pay over part of
our subscription as VAT, we the Members pay the VAT and the Arb Association
pass it on, unpaid tax collectors maybe, but it is the Members who actually
pay the VAT.

We are told we should pay what is on the pink slip, which includes VAT at
20%. But if we pay before 4 Jan 2011 the Arb Association only pays the VAT to
HMRC at 17.5% keeping the rest for itself. A little bonus for the Christmas
party maybe?

The pink slip itself only gives the full amount payable, and does not show
the proportions that are VAT rated, and therefore the actual amount of VAT
charged. Any chance of more clarity, or should I request an invoice. I think
I will.

Am I getting more cynical in my dotage, probably.

Thanks for the... er... clarification, Nick.
Tax law - doncha love it?
Thank goodness I only have to do simple things like predicting tree
failures!

We have the clarification. Rather than waste the time of those UKTC-ers
who are not AA members you can find the relevant information on the AA
website Members' area (http://www.trees.org.uk/members-area). All you
really need to know is that whether you pay before or after the date of the
VAT increase (4 January 2011) the amount doesn't change - you still pay the
amount shown on the pink renewal form.
Happy Christmas and regards to all.

Dear all
We have asked our auditors to give us a definitive ruling and advise us
what action, if any, we need to take. We will post a response on UKTC as
soon as we can.
Regards

Most certainly illegal.

I'm not entirely sure but charging 20% could actually be illegal.

Tahir is correct.

Invoices raised before the 4th should be charging 17.5%

As I understand it invoices raised before Jan 4th should apply 17.5%,
regardless of when they're paid. I guess if they raised invoices on
the 1st they could charge everyone 17.5%

I have received my AA renewal notice as I'm sure most of you have also.
In the accompanying letter it states that the VAT rise is in effect
from the first of Jan, we all know that this is incorrect it is
actually the
fourth. The letter goes on to explain that the service received is
throughout 2011 so the 20% rate applies.
I telephoned the AA to clarify the position, and they confirmed that
the date was incorrect but as the service extends throughout the
year 20% applies.

Not being one to believe all that I am told I have checked on the
HMRC website. 17.5% should apply to tax points before 04/01/11,
therefore the membership- it actually uses membership as an example
in downloadable pdf's.
If you are paying by direct debit quarterly 20% applies to the three
subsequent payments after January (tax point 01/01/11).
I have been promised telephone calls from the AA for the last two
days which have not happened.
I may have missed some small print where the 20% value does apply to
the invoices, unfortunately I have not been able to talk to someone
conversant with the finance matters of the Association.
Can anyone shed any light on whether I have made a mistake or the AA?
