It's basically the same as anywhere marginal, people don't have any cash.
Trees provide cash crops, sometimes the easiest way to get at them is to chop
them down, or use them as fodder. The argan forests in Morocco are badly
overgrazed by tree climbing goats, most Asian nut pines (China, Pakistan) are
going the same way as North American pinyons, i.e. being felled for timber or
cleared for other planting. The biggest problem I guess is that indigenous
people receive next to nothing for what are extremely valuable commodities,
sustainability has to have economical benefit at it's heart.
Pine nuts £45 p/kg:

I'd love to know what the people that harvested them got.

why are they stripping what I would guess from the description 'rocky

we need to use even this land. I guess the answer is yes but I do feel
that the resources to grow food without using this land could be
providing (sorry I'm trying to not point fingers. And surely as stated
it covers other species for a reason.
