Very much like Massaria.

Biscogniauxia nummularia widely occurs on beech in southern Britain. It was
only after the 1976 drought that we started finding it frequently in strip
cankers. Before that drought, we had been finding it mainly on small beech
trees that had been ring-barked at the base by grey squirrels or other
mammals.
We used to accept the myth that functional sapwood was largely free from
fungi or bacteria, and so we wrongly assumed that B. nummularia was merely
colonising trees while they were dying from a combination of suppression and
squirrel damage. We later found that it was present as an endophyte in the
sapwood of the tree and can be triggered into activity (wood decay and then
fruiting in the bark) by various kinds of physiological stress (especially
drought), often in combination with wounding that leads to aeration of a
column of sapwood. In some cases only, this involves strip-cankering.

Thanks for that Luke; i had a quick read. One query it raised with me was
its reference to Biscogniauxia nummularia; which I see around quite a lot,
but have never associated with the strip cankers it mentions? Perhaps 'cos
I'm in the soft and humid SW of England
