I think that one of the most significant things I discovered when carrying
out my research is how little people know about 'science' - and in my
experience (based on comparing my knowledge pre and post research) this can
only really be rectified by doing some. In fact it's quite liberating doing
science and understanding its processes, including limitations, which I
think is what is being discussed in this thread. In fact, it is naïve to
think that anything in the world is foolproof but it is right to identify
shortcomings in what you do - and good scientific research will do just
that. 

I was also struck by how little science there is to support arboricultural
practice in the UK and this demonstrates how the lack of any strategic
approach continues to damage our industry.
